Knowlegde Base: Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) during pregnancy | Midwifery Practice Bergweg

Pregnancy is a special period, but sometimes it can also be challenging due to complications such as high blood pressure (pregnancy hypertension), pre-eclampsia, or growth retardation of your baby. Fortunately, acetylsalicylic acid can help reduce the risk of these conditions in women at increased risk.
Why acetylsalicylic acid? This medication works preventively against pre-eclampsia and growth retardation. It is not a treatment but helps reduce the chance of these complications occurring. It is important to start between the twelfth and sixteenth week of your pregnancy.
How to use acetylsalicylic acid? Take 80-100 mg daily from 12 weeks of pregnancy, preferably in the evening. This way, the medication is best absorbed.
Is it safe for my baby? Yes, research shows that acetylsalicylic acid is safe for your baby and actually reduces the risk of complications such as premature birth, growth retardation, and even fetal death.
Possible side effects Side effects are rare but can include stomach complaints or bleeding. Inform your healthcare provider if you experience any complaints.
What can you do yourself? Quit smoking, eat healthily, exercise sufficiently, and watch your weight gain. Small adjustments make a big difference for you and your baby.
Do I have an increased risk? This will be discussed during your intake.

History of pre-eclampsia

Long interval between pregnancies (>10 years)
