Pregnancy

A beautiful moment, you have discovered that you are pregnant. What now? The exciting journey begins!

Read here about the next steps of your pregnancy that we will go through after you register with our practice.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound

First ultrasound. Once you register with us, we will schedule your first appointment around 6 to 8 weeks into your pregnancy. If you need to see us earlier, we are here for you! During this 45-minute introductory meeting, you will first meet our sonographer, who will perform a special ultrasound. This is a magical moment, as it will be the first time you see your baby! After that, you will meet our midwife, who will guide you and provide all the necessary information.

We conduct all ultrasounds in our practice, including the 13 and 20-week scans, so you won't need to go anywhere else.

10-week ultrasound Around week 10, we perform a dating scan. During this scan, we determine the due date and check the baby's stomach, bladder, arms, and legs. This scan usually takes place during the counseling session for the NIPT test.

13-week ultrasound The 13-week ultrasound is a form of prenatal screening offered free of charge to all pregnant women as part of a scientific study. This scan takes place between the 12th and 14th week of pregnancy and carries no risks.

16-week fun scan This optional scan allows you to see your baby again and possibly find out the gender. For our clients, this scan costs €25, and for others, it costs €35.

20-week ultrasound This detailed medical scan, performed between weeks 19 and 21, checks for possible congenital abnormalities. Fortunately, most babies are born healthy.

Growth scan This scan is performed on indication, for example, if there is doubt about the baby's size or if you have previously given birth to a (too) large or (too) small baby.

Position scan Around week 35, we check the baby's position in the womb. It's reassuring to know the baby's position before labor begins.

There is always room to request additional scans. Even if there is no medical indication, you can schedule extra scans. If you prefer not to have any scans, that is also possible.

Prenatal screening

Prenatal screening

With prenatal screening, you can check if your baby might have a chromosomal abnormality, such as Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, or Patau syndrome. Additionally, you can have structural abnormalities checked through the 13 and 20-week ultrasound scans. The choice to undergo these examinations is entirely up to you. We are happy to inform you about the possibilities so that you can make an informed decision. In our knowledge base, you will find an extensive article about prenatal screening.

Check ups

Keeping Track of Development

Regular check-ups are important to monitor the health of you and your baby. We schedule these appointments in advance. During your pregnancy, you will have about 14 appointments. We track your baby's growth and development, measure your blood pressure and weight, and address any questions you may have.

We always take plenty of time for you.

How are you doing?

In addition to medical checks, there is always room to discuss how you are doing. Whether it's practical questions, uncertainties, or concerns – we are here for you.

In Case of a Medical Risk

If there is a high-risk medical situation, we will refer you to a gynecologist at the hospital. We primarily collaborate with Franciscus Gasthuis and Erasmus MC. We have a close working relationship with these gynecologists and work intensively with them on a daily basis.

Pregnancy
What are the first symptoms of pregnancy?

The first symptoms of pregnancy may include a missed period, tender breasts, fatigue, nausea, and more frequent urination. These symptoms vary from woman to woman.

Vaccinations

When you're pregnant, you have the option to receive a vaccination against whooping cough. This shot is often known as the "22-week jab." Your midwife is available to provide you with all the detailed information about it. You also have the choice to get the flu vaccination during your pregnancy.

How do I know how far along I am in my pregnancy?

Pregnancy is calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period. Use a pregnancy calculator or ask us for an exact calculation.

Usually we use the 10 weeks scan to estimate the date exactly.

What should you not eat during pregnancy?

Avoid raw meat, raw fish (such as sushi), unwashed vegetables, soft cheeses made from raw milk, and liver products. Also, be cautious with caffeine and avoid alcohol. Have you tried the ZwangerHap app from the Nutrition Centre yet? It can help you choose the right nutrition for you and your baby.

When do you feel your baby move for the first time?

Most women feel their baby’s first movements between the 18th and 22nd week of pregnancy. In subsequent pregnancies, these movements might be noticed earlier.

How much weight do you gain during pregnancy?

On average, you gain between 10 and 15 kilograms during pregnancy, depending on your starting weight. If you have any questions, please discuss them with your midwife.
