Contraception

You're welcome to consult with us for information on contraception or to have an Implanon implant or IUD inserted.

There are various forms of contraception, and we're here to help you find the one that best suits your needs.

Types of IUD

Types of IUD

### Hormonal IUD

There are two types of hormonal IUDs available: the **Mirena IUD** and the **Kyleena IUD**.

At our practice, we pride ourselves on our expertise in placing these IUDs. Women from all over the country come to us for their placement because of our extensive experience.

The progestogen in a hormonal IUD works by blocking the natural hormones from the pituitary gland that are needed to stimulate the ovaries to produce a mature egg. As a result, usually no egg is released, which means fertilization cannot occur. Additionally, the progestogen alters the composition of the cervical mucus, making the cervix inaccessible to sperm.

Even though the amount of progestogen in a hormonal IUD is so low that ovulation might still occasionally occur, its localized release directly into the uterus keeps the hormone concentration in the cervix high enough to prevent sperm from entering and fertilizing an egg.

### Copper IUD

**What is a Copper IUD?**

The copper IUD is a highly reliable, hormone-free form of contraception—often also called a copper-bearing IUD. With a reliability rate of over 99%, the chance of pregnancy is virtually negligible.

The copper IUD is T-shaped and made from plastic and copper. It releases a small, controlled amount of copper, which inactivates sperm and prevents any monthly fertilization. This type of IUD is also sometimes referred to as a **T-Safe IUD**.

**Getting a Copper IUD Inserted**

At Verloskundig Centrum Bergweg, we have extensive experience in inserting IUDs, including the copper IUD. Women from all over the country trust our expertise—we insert an average of 10 IUDs per week.

The copper IUD is inserted into your uterus with the help of an insertion sleeve. Once placed, you are immediately protected against pregnancy. If you’d like a T-Safe copper IUD, you can have it comfortably inserted right here at our practice!

Preparation

Before your appointment, it's a good idea to take 2 paracetamol about an hour in advance to help reduce uterine cramps. Or using feminax.

You can schedule your IUD insertion appointment once you have a rough idea of when your period will start. This timing can also make the procedure easier, especially if you haven't given birth before.

During the Appointment

After your midwife has thoroughly explained everything, she will begin the IUD insertion.

If you haven't given birth before, it's possible that you might not feel your best immediately after the procedure. Feeling a bit dizzy or even experiencing some nausea and vomiting are normal reactions. It's a great idea to have someone accompany you home. Most often, you'll be feeling fine and ready to leave within about 5 minutes after the insertion; sometimes it might take up to an hour before you feel well enough to head home.

If you've given birth before, these reactions are very rare, and you can comfortably come on your own for the IUD placement.

Frequently Asked Questions About
Contraception
Which form of contraception is most reliable?

The most reliable contraceptive methods are the IUD, the birth control pill, and the implant. Work together with your healthcare provider to choose the option that best suits your needs.

Which Contraception Is Suitable After Giving Birth?

After childbirth, there are several safe and effective contraceptive options tailored to support your recovery and lifestyle. For many new mothers—especially if you’re breastfeeding—progestin-only methods are often recommended, as they won’t affect your milk supply. Here are some options:

  • IUD (Intrauterine Device): Both the copper IUD and hormonal IUD provide long-term, reliable contraception without daily effort.

  • Contraceptive Implant: A small, discreet implant offers effective protection for several years.

  • Progestin-only Pills (Mini Pill): These are a gentle option, particularly suitable for breastfeeding mothers.

  • Combined Contraceptive Methods: If you’re not breastfeeding and your body has had time to recover, you might consider options like the combined pill, patch, or ring.

Your choice will depend on your personal health, whether you’re breastfeeding, and your future family planning goals. We’re here to guide you through these options and help you decide which method best suits your unique needs.

What Are the Side Effects of Contraception?

The side effects of contraception can vary depending on the method you choose and your individual body response. Here are some common considerations:

  • Hormonal Methods (Pills, Implants, Hormonal IUDs, Patches, Rings): These may cause changes in your menstrual cycle—such as lighter periods, irregular bleeding, or spotting—as well as potential side effects like mood swings, mild weight fluctuations, headaches, breast tenderness, or nausea. For some women, these effects tend to lessen over time.

  • Non-Hormonal Methods (Copper IUD): The copper IUD is hormone-free, but it can sometimes lead to heavier menstrual bleeding or more pronounced cramps, especially in the first few months of use.

Each woman’s experience is unique, and not everyone experiences side effects. It’s important to discuss your options with your healthcare provider to find the method that best suits your body and lifestyle. Your provider can offer guidance and adjustments to help manage any side effects and ensure you feel confident in your choice of contraception.

Can I switch to a different form of contraception?

Absolutely! You can switch to another contraceptive method at any time if your needs change or if you're experiencing side effects with your current option. Many women decide to make a change, and we're here to help guide you through the process. Just discuss your concerns and preferences with your healthcare provider so that together you can determine the method that best suits your lifestyle and health.
