Maternity Period
Discover what you can expect from us and what to keep in mind during the first few weeks with your baby—or learn everything you need to know from our lactation consultant, Astrid!
Maternity period
After your delivery, you are entitled to postpartum care. A dedicated postpartum caregiver visits you and your baby every day to ensure your recovery from childbirth is progressing well. She assists you with breastfeeding and teaches you and your partner all the essential aspects of baby care.
It’s important to arrange for postpartum care early in your pregnancy—ideally before 16 weeks—so they can visit during your last trimester for an intake consultation and discuss mutual expectations.
Our Postpartum Visits
During your postpartum period, you can expect our personalized home visits. Our dedicated team will visit you 2 to 4 times to conduct medical check-ups for both you and your baby.
What to Expect:
-
Blood Pressure Measurement: We ensure your well-being by checking your blood pressure regularly.
-
Stitch Evaluation: We carefully examine any stitches to ensure proper healing.
-
Comprehensive Medical Check-up: We monitor your recovery with thorough assessments.
-
Feeding Support: Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, we’re here to offer expert guidance.
Even after 6 weeks, you can still turn to us. Simply schedule a follow-up appointment to chat about your birth experience, address any final questions, and receive valuable information on contraception.

Heel prick test
Between the 3rd and 7th day after birth, the Centre for Youth and Family offers the heel prick test for your baby. This is a standard newborn screening provided to every baby in the Netherlands, designed to detect a number of rare, but serious conditions.
A characteristic of these conditions is that, while they cannot be cured, they can be effectively managed—helping to prevent any potential physical and mental damage.
During the heel prick test, a small blood sample is taken from your baby's heel. Rest assured, your little one won't develop a fever or suffer any aftereffects; in fact, many babies actually sleep right through it!
The heel prick test is free of charge and completely optional.
At the same time as the heel prick test, a hearing screening is performed. For more details, please check out our knowledge base.

The postpartum period lasts at least 6 weeks after your delivery. During this time, you'll recover from childbirth, get to know your baby, and receive dedicated assistance with baby care and breastfeeding from the postpartum care team during the first 8 days. Your midwife will also visit you to provide additional support.
Learn more about this in our menu!
Getting prepared for your postpartum phase can make all the difference in easing your transition into motherhood. Think about scheduling your postpartum care services, setting up your home with the essentials for both you and your baby, and discussing your individual needs with your midwife. By planning ahead, you create a nurturing environment that supports both your recovery and the joyful journey of bonding with your newborn.
Taking time to rest, eating nutritious foods, staying well-hydrated, and engaging in gentle exercise all support your recovery. Listen to your body, and if you have any concerns, be sure to discuss them with your midwife.
