Knowlegde Base: Copper IUD | Midwifery Practice Bergweg

Would you like to have a copper IUD inserted? Verloskundig Centrum Bergweg is the perfect option for you. We have extensive experience in placing IUDs, including the T-Safe copper IUD. On this page, you can read all about the copper IUD, the insertion process, and its benefits. The copper IUD is a highly reliable form of contraception without hormones. It is also known as a copper-bearing IUD. With a reliability of over 99%, the chance of pregnancy is virtually nil.
The copper IUD has a T-shape and is made of plastic and copper. The IUD releases a small amount of copper, which inactivates sperm cells, preventing monthly fertilization. This copper IUD is also known as the T-Safe.
Inserting the Copper IUD
We have extensive experience in placing IUDs, including the copper IUD. Many women come to our practice because of our expertise in this area. We place an average of 10 IUDs per week, so you can trust our experience.
The copper IUD is placed in the uterus using an insertion tube. After placement, you are immediately protected against pregnancy. Would you like to have a T-Safe copper IUD placed? You can do so at our practice!
The Copper IUD as Emergency Contraception
A copper IUD can also be used as emergency contraception if placed within 5 days of unprotected intercourse. The IUD changes the lining of the uterus, preventing a potentially fertilized egg from implanting in the uterine wall.
The T-Safe copper IUD, which we prescribe, is the only IUD that protects against unwanted pregnancy for ten years.

How to Have a Copper IUD Inserted? The insertion of a hormonal or copper IUD is done by an experienced midwife.
An hour before the appointment, we recommend taking 1000 mg of paracetamol, as the insertion can be sensitive.
Our midwife will first explain in detail how the IUD is placed. At that moment, you have the opportunity to ask questions. You will also receive information about what to expect after the placement. Usually, you experience some discomfort in your lower abdomen for a few hours to a few days. You may also have light bleeding for a few days.
When to Call If you have persistent bright red bleeding and a lot of abdominal pain, it is advisable to have the hormonal or copper IUD checked by ultrasound. If you are unsure about the amount of blood loss, you can always contact us.
The bleeding can be irregular in the first months after the insertion of the hormonal or copper IUD.
