Knowlegde Base: Hormonal IUDs | Midwifery Practice Bergweg

Our practice has extensive experience in placing IUDs, both hormonal and hormone-free. You do not need to be under our care to have an IUD placed. We help many women because we can immediately check with an ultrasound whether the IUD is correctly positioned. Read here about the two types of hormonal IUDs.
Hormonal IUDs: Reliable and Effective
There are two types of hormonal IUDs:
Mirena and Kyleena. Both are highly reliable contraceptive methods, with the main difference being the amount of hormones they release.
How Does a Hormonal IUD Work? The IUD continuously releases a small amount of progestogen. This hormone:
Blocks ovulation: No mature egg is released.
Changes cervical mucus: Sperm cells cannot reach the uterus.
Makes the uterine lining unsuitable: Fertilized eggs cannot implant.
The Two Types of IUDs
Mirena:
Contains a slightly higher amount of hormones.
Suitable for women with heavy periods or menopausal symptoms.
Registered for use up to 8 years.
Cost: approximately €140.
Kyleena:
Contains fewer hormones than Mirena.
Just as reliable, but less suitable for menopausal symptoms or heavy bleeding.
Registered for use up to 5 years.
Cost: approximately €140.
What to Expect After Placement?
The First Few Months: You may experience irregular bleeding, usually in the form of spotting (light bleeding or brown discharge). This will decrease over time and may eventually stop completely.
Long Term: Some women may stop menstruating altogether, without affecting the reliability of the IUD.
After Removal: The natural cycle returns almost immediately. Becoming pregnant is often possible within a few weeks.
Why Choose a Hormonal IUD?
Reliable Contraception:
Five to eight years of pregnancy protection.
Less Bleeding: Periods become lighter or stop altogether.
Convenience: No daily use like the pill, preventing user errors.
Quickly Fertile Again: You can become pregnant almost immediately after removal.
Advantages:
Highly reliable.
No daily hormone intake.
Rapid return of fertility after removal.
Disadvantages:
Your menstrual pattern may change.
You cannot control the timing of your menstruation.
