Water birth

Giving birth in water can promote relaxation and calm, which can positively contribute to the birthing process. We have been assisting with water births for years and often see that women experience more relaxation and calm when they give birth in water. The warmth and support of the water positively contribute to the progress of the birth. Some women choose to stay in the bath only during the dilation phase, while others opt to have their baby born in the water as well. As long as it is medically safe, there are many possibilities.

Preparing for a Water Birth A water birth is possible as long as the delivery progresses without complications. Here you can read what you need to arrange and consider when planning a water birth.

Water Birth at Home You can give birth at home in your own bathtub or in a special birthing tub. During the consultation, you will discuss with the midwife whether your living situation is suitable and make a plan together.

At our practice, you can also borrow a birthing tub! You don't have to pay for this. However, it is necessary to purchase a disposable set to keep the tub hygienic. You can easily order this set here.

Would you like to borrow our birthing tub? Indicate this during the consultation.

Water Birth at the Sophia Birth Center At the Sophia Birth Center, you can give birth in water in a birth room. Each room has its own inflatable birthing tub.

Please note that you pay a personal contribution of €85 for the inner liner, water hose, and water pump.

Water Birth at the Franciscus Gasthuis You can also give birth in water at the Franciscus Gasthuis, in one of the two specially equipped rooms. Since the number of rooms is limited, it cannot be guaranteed in advance that a bathroom will be available at the time of your delivery.

If you want to be certain that you can give birth in water, then giving birth at home or at the Sophia Birth Center is a better choice. However, during your delivery, it can always be checked whether a bathroom is available at the Franciscus Gasthuis.
