We offer your baby the heel prick between the third and seventh day after birth. The heel prick is a standard test that is offered to every baby in the Netherlands. The goal is to spot a number of rare but severe conditions.
What typifies these conditions is that they cannot be cured, but they can be treated. This can prevent physical and mental harm.
For the heel prick, we take some blood from the baby’s foot. This won’t cause a fever or any afterpains for your baby. Did you know that many babies actually sleep through the heel prick?
The heel prick is free and optional.
